Western and Uaw Reach Tentative Collective Agreement

On October 14, 2021, Western University and the University of Western Ontario Faculty Association (UWOFA) reached a tentative collective agreement, potentially ending the months-long labour dispute that has affected the education sector in London, Ontario.

The negotiations between Western and UWOFA began in January 2021, but talks broke down in August, leading to a strike vote on September 13. UWOFA represents approximately 1,600 faculty members and librarians at Western University.

The tentative agreement includes provisions for job security, compensation, and workload issues. It aims to address the concerns of both faculty members and the university administration while providing a fair and equitable working environment for all parties.

One of the significant issues in the bargaining process was workload. UWOFA has long expressed concerns about the increasing demands on faculty members, which they believe are not adequately compensated. The union also raised issues about the precarious nature of academic work and job security for sessional instructors and graduate students.

The tentative agreement includes a commitment to reduce workload and improve job security for sessional instructors. The deal also provides opportunities for graduate students to receive additional financial support and secure employment opportunities.

Another significant issue addressed in the agreement is compensation. The new deal includes a salary increase of 1.25% for the first two years and 1.5% in the final year of the three-year contract.

The tentative agreement still needs to be ratified by both parties. If approved, it will bring an end to the strike that began on October 16, and classes at Western University could resume as early as next week.

The labour dispute at Western University has highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by post-secondary institutions in Canada. The current pandemic has put additional stress on an already strained system and has shown the need for improved working conditions, job security, and compensation for academic staff.

The tentative collective agreement between Western and UWOFA is an important step towards a fair and just education sector. It will help ensure that faculty members at Western University are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve, and that students receive the high-quality education they expect and deserve.
